Chinese film festival

Professor Feusmith,

Since we spoke I've been in touch with Professor Zhu
Hong and some student groups about the possibility of
screening at least five Chinese films at Boston
University.

I have attached film synopses and below you will find
a list of the films, guest artists who will be here
accompanying each film, and a description of our
program.

Note, the guest filmmakers and actors are on a limited
schedule and will only be available the first two
weeks in February.

On the numbered list below films available are
1-11, 13-20, and 22-24

We are interested in doing a large event, with a
number of guest artists provided we can screen the
films on 35mm format.

In addition to the directors and actors listed below,
both Shanghai and Xi'an studios are sending
distributors and studio professionals.

Program Description
------------
Celebration of Chinese Cinema 2001 would like to share
newly subtitled prints of over 30 films from major
Chinese film studios (Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai,
Tianjin) with educational and community institutions
nation-wide.

We have invited the filmmakers and producers to meet
audiences and particpate in educational programs for
the months of February and March 2001. After
launching on Chinese New Year in 8 Manhattan Cinemas
(Angelika, Village East, Regency, etc.) the films and
their directors will travel to Universities in the
Northeast.

These films--many of which have never been seen
outside of China--were released by their respective
studios in the interst of giving a series of snapshots
of China as it has been seen at different times by its
own cultural elite. The films include selections from
Shanghai's early days as the film capital of China to
propaganda films of the '60s and modern day fictional
works. We feel this program is particularly relevant
at a time when America and China are becoming more
economically involved. Without an attempt to share
cultural difference between the two countries'
peoples, their understanding of one another will be
limted to a view informed by politics and economics.
Chinese Cinema Celebration has chosen films for their
historical and cultural relevance.

The hosting instituion we receive five(5) films,
including the director and other crew for one film, to
be presented in a minifestival. Due to sponsorship we
are able to offer a reduced price to institutions of
learning and community centers. $1250 includes the
cost of showing each film one time, in addition the
presenting institution would pay for accomodation of
the director and up to 3 others, and would agree to
ship the films to their next screening location.

In addition to the films and speakers, we offer
promotional materials, press kits and organizing
support from our Manhattan office. In the past we
have worked closely with student and community
organizations to promote the event. Nation-wide we
will be taking out advertisements in Chinese language
newspapers and will provide local papers and college
papers with press releases tailored to each event.
With cooperation from the hosting institution in
promoting the event, attendance over the five
screenings can be expected at 350-1500 depending on
the seating capacity of the screening location and the
amount of effort put into promotion. The hosting
institution is free to charge any price for the
screenings.

We would regard the festival as successful if it drew
an audience of Chinese and English speakers that was
motivated to discussion and reflexion after seeing the
films.
