Letters are a link unlike any other. Even in these days of instant messaging and voicemail, the anticipation stirred up by a letter's expectant arrival can drive awaiting recipients to distraction. Just knowing that there's something special on its way just for you can be exciting-or frightening-prospect.
Postmen in the Mountains, director Huo Jianqi's exploration of a father and son in China's Hunan province, concerns an old man's postal route-one so rural that it takes him three days to complete. Crossing icy streams and scaling cliffs, he provides the families on his route with their only news of the outside world. Too frail now to continue with the route, the man passes it on to his son, who comes along on his father's last passage of the route. Along the way, the two experience conflict and resolution, and are graced by their growing love and admiration for each other.
Back by popular demand after the Rafael's recent Celebration of Chinese Cinema, Postmen in the Mountains' producer Kang Jianmin will appear in person at the screening. |
