the demands of the job have taken a toll on his legs. Like loyal functionaries everywhere, he is now finding that the sacrifices he willingly made for his job are
not recognized by the higher-ups, and he now regrets that he neglected his family
for duty. It should also be said that the postmen have one of the coolest dogs ever. Lao Er, the wonder dog, fetches firewood, blazes the trail and announces the arrival of the postmen. Lao Er has accompanied Father on his rounds for years, and the delicate hesitation at the end of the movie when Son sets off on the route alone and Lao Er must decide whether to follow or stay with Father is lump-in-the-throat stuff. "Postmen" is no "Terminator." There isn't much action and the subtitles* sometimes whiz by so fast on the bottom of the screen that they are hard to follow. But on a lazy summer day, you might step into a theater and be transported into this lush, exotic world thousands of miles from here. And when you emerge, you will be transformed -- at least until you get into the car and turn the key. E-mail C.W.
