Many Americans are unaware of China's
contribution to the Allied effort during World War I. While it should have been
a moment of triumph, 1919 was a year of disillusionment and indignation for China.
The Conference at Versailles was to heal the wounds of the Great War. Participating
nations were to do their best to maximize their benefits and maintain their dignity.
However, the Chinese Delegation was under great pressure to accept a peace treaty
that insulted its dignity. The event provoked the fury and protest of the whole
nation and marks the beginning of modern history in China.
