This film is the last in a Film Quartet
produced by Emei Film Studio.
The films The Accused (1994),
Too Late to Apologize (1995) and Brother Wu Invites God (1995) all explore the
problems facing rural communities in China dealing with modern life while respecting
ancient traditions.
A common thread of these series is the
exquisite cinematography and the emphasis on moral dilemmas. In "Shangri-La
Town", the mayor is arrested. This event provokes turmoil in the townspeople's
hearts: some show an ambiguous attitude and other shift their loyalty this way
and that... This film is reminiscent of a Chekhov play in that it delves deeply
into the lives of the characters.
