This is an important film made in 1959
commemorating the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of
China. It helps us to understand the patriotic fervor that drove China after the
revolution. In 1931, Japan begins its occupation in China
while the country is gripped by civil war. A young girl's life changes drastically
when a chain of events demands that she picks up the mantle of leadership against
all odds. After escaping an arranged marriage, her own suicide,
and a repressive relationship that she believed to be love, she plunges into the
student movement against Japanese aggression. While society tumbles in turmoil
caused by the White Terror, she stands up against the KMT government. Neither
threats nor imprisonment can drive her away from her cause. Finally, she becomes
one of the heroes contributing to the founding of the new China. Credits
