The film is based on the play written by Cao Yu, considered a masterpiece of contemporary Chinese drama. The director, Sun Daolin, is faithful to the play in content and style. His film delivers extremely powerful performances from some of the most revered and talented actors in China.

While visiting her daughter at a new job, a mother discovers that her daughter's master is the same man for whom she gave birth to illegitimate twins. One was sickly so he took the healthy one, abandoned her and the other over thirty years ago. The abandoned twin has become a union organizer in his father's mines. To make matters worse, the daughter falls in love with the young master, her half brother. A thunderstorm is on its way.
