The story focuses on the dreams and hardships of a beautiful young student whose major crime in those days was to be born into a bourgeoisie family. While she adjusts to her new situation, gains recognition, marries and creates a place for herself, we experience through her eyes the periods just before, through and just after Cultural Revolution. This film really exposes the power of tradition and people's resistance to change. People used to socializing around a well will often resist indoor plumbing.
